Title: A Series of Charts with Sailing Directions, Embracing Surveys of the Farralones, Entrance to the Bay of San Francisco, Bays of San Francisco and San Pablo, Straits of Carquines and Suisun Bay, Confluence and Deltic Branches of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers, and the Sacramento River (with the Middle Fork) to the American River, Including the Cities of Sacramento and Boston, State of California Author: Ringgold, Cadwalader Place: Washington Publisher: Printed by Jno. T. Towers Date: 1851 Description: 44 pp. Illustrated with 12 tinted views of San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento River, by W.H. Dougal, on 11 plates; and 6 large folding charts of San Francisco Bay. 28.3x19 cm. (11x7¼"), original brown cloth with gilt cover decoration & title. First Edition. Streeter remarks that "the charts, which include much of the shore and give many place names, together with the views give a picture of how the country from the Golden Gate to Sacramento appeared in 1850, which is of great interest...." The collation of this copy varies from that more commonly seen of the 12 views being on 8 plates, as in Kurutz 536c. This variation is not recorded in the main citation by Kurutz, nor by Howes (though in the notes at the end of his citation, Kurutz writes "The Norris catalog records an 1851 copy with six folding maps and eleven tinted plates"; this is the Norris copy, with his bookplate). Our copy does match the collation of the Streeter copy, which he calls the "first quarto issue," and notes that the plates "of the 1851 edition are certainly preferable to those in the 1852 edition. This is especially the case with the plates in what I call the first issue." Cowan p.533; Howes R303; Kurutz 536; Streeter 2679. Rubberstamp of Thos. Tennant, Mathematical & Nautical Instruments, San Francisco, to front free endpaper; small ticket of bookseller Fred. M. DeWitt, Oakland, to bottom right of front pastedown; bookplate of Thomas Wayne Norris. Lot Amendments Condition: Rubbing to covers, spine and corners worn, joints cracked; come darkening and foxing to contents, 2 maps with neatly repaired short tears, 1 with a short crease split; good to very good, charts clean and unfoxed. Item number: 211746
