Title: A Series of Charts, with Sailing Directions embracing Surveys of the Farralones, Entrance to the Bay of San Francisco, Bays of San Francisco and San Pablo, Straits of Carquines and Suisun Bay, Confluence and Deltic Branches of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers, and the Sacramento River (with the Middle Fork) to the American River, Including the Cities of Sacramento and Boston, State of California Author: Ringgold, Cadwalader Place: Washington Publisher: Printed by Jno. T. Towers Date: 1852 Description: 48 pp. Illustrated with 12 tinted views of San Francisco Bay & the Sacramento River, by W.H. Dougal, on 8 plates; and 6 large folding charts of San Francisco Bay printed on thin, crisp bank-note paper. (4to) 28.1x18.5 cm. (11x7¼"), original brown cloth with gilt cover decoration & title. Fourth Edition. Important series of charts and views, and sailing directions, for the entrance to San Francisco Bay and the inland waterways of gold rush California, first published the preceding year. Streeter remarks that "the charts, which include much of the shore and give many place names, together with the views give a picture of how the country from the Golden Gate to Sacramento appeared in 1850, which is of great interest...." Warren Heckrotte comments: "The views in the fourth edition are the same as in the first edition with plates, but are arranged differently; Streeter says that the views in the first edition with plates are the best, but based on a comparison, there is no basis for that statement." The charts are: General Chart Embracing Surveys of the Farallones Entrance to the Bay of San Francisco and San Pablo Straits of Carquines and Suisun Bay and the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. 50.5x76.2 cm (19¾x30"). Chart of the Farallones and Entrance to the Bay of San Francisco California. 51x76 cm (20x30"). Chart of the Bay of San Pablo Straits of Carquines and part of the Bay of San Francisco California. 77x52 cm (30¼x20½"). Chart of Suisun & Vallejo Bays with the Confluence of the Rivers Sacramento and San Joaquin California. 50x77 cm (19½x20½"). Chart of the Sacramento River from Suisin City to the American River California. 76x51.5 cm (30x20¼"). Straits of Carquines and Vallejo Bay [with 5 other small charts on single sheet]. 51x77 cm (20x30¼"). Provenance: John Howell-Books at Parke-Bernet, 10/69 References: Cowan p.533; Howes R303; Kurutz 536e; Streeter 2679 (1st ed). Lot Amendments Condition: Covers with a little fading and extremity wear, small stain to lower front cover; some light foxing to text leaves within, a few of the charts with short stub tears, but they are overall clean and fine, the volume very good. Item number: 265230
