A RARE GIBSON CHET ATKINS 'SUPER 4000' ELECTRIC ARCHTOP GUITAR, FROM A PRODUCTION RUN OF TWENTYFIVE, FADED CHERRY BURST, SIGNED BY CHET ATKINS, 1997 American made, serial number 7099707, deluxe hollow body, carved solid spruce top, flamed maple back and sides, deluxe bound body neck and headstock, the headstock featuring mother of pearl split diamond inlay and 'Gibson' insignia, mother of pearl diamond inlay to rear of headstock, mother of pearl fleur de lys truss rod cover, stepped imperial style machine heads with mother of pearl buttons, ebony fingerboard with split block abalone and mother of pearl inlays, gold-plated floating Tune-o-Matic with fleur de lys abalone inlays, gold-plated 'Super 4000' tail piece with decorative etching, ebony inserts and Abalone fleur de lys inlay, deluxe bound tortoiseshell pickguard and arm rest, undermounted ebony slider volume control, single float mounted, gold plated Humbucking pickup, brown hard shell case and matching 'Gibson Custom Shop' canvas outer, signed by Chet Atkins on rear of headstock PROVENANCE: Private Collection, Melbourne, acquired 2005 OTHER NOTES: The Gibson guitar company has produced some of the most exceptional archtop guitars the world has had the pleasure to experience. Since its introduction in 1934, the super deluxe 'Super 400' model has inspired players and luthiers alike. From artists such as Scotty More (of Elvis Presley fame) and Chris Isaak through to master luthiers such as New York's John D'Angelico (D'Angelico Guitars), the concept of the 'Archtop as Art' began with Gibson's daring top of the line offering. Until 1997 the 'Super 400' existed as the pinnacle of the super deluxe archtop design from Gibson. A rare collaboration between the Gibson Guitar Company and noted guitarist Chet Atkins changed this. While most commonly associated with his collaborations with the Gretsch guitar company (as seen in the 'Super Chet' - , and the 'Country Gentleman' - ) the 'Super Chet' is without question the crown jewel for Chet Atkins collectors. Signed by the master guitarist and limited to only 25 pieces, the Gibson 'Super 4000' set a new benchmark for the most resplendent detailing in a Gibson Archtop guitar, and still holds the title.
