A Highly Important Massive Bronze Ritual Wine Jar, Fanglei Late Shang/Early Western Zhou dynasty Each side of the tapering body divided into horizontal registers divided by vertical hooked flanges repeated at the corners, the lowest and widest register cast in relief with large taotie masks, which on one side is centered by a D-shaped handle surmounted by a horned dragon mask cast on the underside of the upturned lower jaw with a cicada, below pairs of birds confronted on smaller taotie masks, with similar pairs of birds repeated on the rectangular neck and flared pedestal foot flanking a short flange, the rounded shoulder cast with pairs of confronted dragons separated on two sides by a further large horned dragon mask with curved tusks, and on the other two, narrower sides, with a pair of similar dragon-mask and D-shaped handles suspending loose rings cast with abstract attenuated dragons with large eyes, all cast in crisp relief and reserved on bands of leiwen , with a six-character pictogram cast inside the neck, the olive-toned patina with some blue-green encrusation 25in.
