A FINELY CARVED AND RARE RHINOCEROS HORN 'SCHOLAR AND HORSE' LIBATION CUP 17TH CENTURY Of gently flaring form carved as a mountain face and rendered in high relief to depict a continuous scene of a scholar and attendant with a horse, one side depicting the horse with head lowered towards the scholar as it drinks from a stream behind a weeping willow tree, the tree detailed with gnarled roots and a thick trunk, its leafy branches spreading along the rim and then over the edge into the interior, the other side with the attendant standing behind the scholar and beside a tall leafy and flowering peony tree growing amongst rockwork, the horn of an attractive warm light brown tone 5¾ in. (14.6 cm.) wide
