Provenance: Estate of a Belgian national collector who lived and worked in mainland China from 1896 – 1948. Ming dynasty votive paintings were used within temples, Buddhist monasteries, Daoist abbeys and private chapels in conjunction with mortuary rituals and ancestral offerings, notably the Shui Zhai or offering for the Souls of All Sentient Beings. 69.5"H x 36"W, Circa - Late Ming - Early Qing Dynasty, Late 17th C.
