70 2660 Calligraphy Pauw J 1730 1797 70 2660 Calligraphy Pauw J 1730 1797 70/2660 [Calligraphy]. Pauw, J. (1730-1797). "Door Jan Pauw Schoolmeester en Voorsanger te Oosterleek 1750". Calligraphed manuscript in pen and black ink (title-p. also in red and grey ink), (16) leaves (incl. first blank), recto only, contemp. brown marbled wrappers, 32x40 cm. - Vertical fold throughout; occas. sl. frayed (incl. wrappers); backwr. dam. = The first of a series of five beautifully calligraphed albums, containing some spectacular calligraphed leaves and capitals. Jan Pauw is listed in 1745 as member of the Genootschap der Mathematische wetenschappen (onder de spreuk: een onvermoeide arbeid komt alles te boven"), and was a schoolmaster in various places in the province of Overijssel. Other than that not much is known about him, but as can be concluded from this and the following 4 albums, he certainly deserves a place in the strong tradition of Dutch calligraphy and may possibly have been trained by one of the famous writing masters of the first half of the 18th cent. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CX.
