Guestbook, 225 lvs. w. num. entries (signatures, remarks and drawings) (recto and verso) and a few blank lvs., (col.) pen and ink and pencil on paper, between 1947-1984 (mainly before 1965), contemp. brown calf w. gilt logo of "Kabouter Jenever" on frontcover, gilt spine w. mor. letterpiece, matching slipcase, 4to. - Bookblock loose. Upper joint splitting; sl. worn along extremities (mostly backstrip); top of slipcase loose. = Interesting and rich album containing numerous autographs, drawings, small anecdotes and/ or poems by the guests of the "bohémien" Amsterdam café "Theo Ruiter", previously located at the Rozengracht. Theo Ruiter (1911-1965) bought the café in 1939 and it became a safe haven for many people (of all layers of society) during the war. After the war it became a meeting point for the established and upcoming cultural talent of the "higher" and "lower" cultural classes. Frequently it served as a location for exhibitions by for painters, caricaturists and cartoonists. For example, the television debut of Boudewijn Büch was at this café. A curious detail is that when the customers weren't able to pay the bill, Theo asked them to sign the guestbook. Sadly Theo died in 1965. His son Karel de Ruiter continued his legacy in the same manner until 1987. To name a few contributors: Jacques Bloem, Remco Campert, Simon Vinkenoog, Johnny Jordaan, Ferry van Delden, Charles and Wim Boost, Cees Bantzinger Mies Bouhuys, Ed.
