Velocity of the Hydrogen Atom. III. Nitrogen and Oxygen Atoms. IV. An Anomalous Effect in Nitrogen (SS. 537-587). - " First edition of Rutherford's famous paper in which he reports that he found that alpha particles in collision with nitrogen atoms liberated from them nuclei of hydrogen atoms. Thus artificial transmutation was induced : in other words the atom had been split, the alchemists dream had come true! Rutherford assumed that a proton was emitted from the nucleus whenever an alpha-particle interacted with it. It was found that the kinetic energy of the protons emitted could be higher than that of the incident alpha-particle. In other words, the internal energy of the nucleus had to enter into the phenomenon of transmutation . This was the first observed case of the artificial transmutation of one type of atom (nitrogen) into another (oxygen) - the dream of the alchemist had come true at last " (Alicke, From Alchemy to Atoms, Interlibrum Cat. 263/4, Nr. 993). - Bibliotheksexpl. mit einigen Stempeln u.
