II was a medium size saloon built from 1959 to 1967 as a successor to the 2.4 and 3.4 models, manufactured between 1957 and 1959, known as Jaguar Mk. 1. The Mk. II was handsome, powerful and a good handling saloon which was offered with a choice of three six-cylinder twin cam engines, 2.4 litre, 3.4 litre or 3.8 litre. The 3.8 unit used for the Mk. II was similar to the 3.8 E-Type unit having the same block, crankshaft, connecting rods and pistons but different inlet manifold and carburation, twin SU's instead of three on the European specification E-Type with 30bhp less as a result. The head of the six-cylinder engine in the Mk. II had curved ports compared to the straight ports of the E-Type. The Mk. II 3.8 litre is a quick car even by today's standards, the engine produced 220bhp and could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 8.5 seconds reaching a top speed of 125mph. When the car was new, it was unquestionably one of the fastest, saloon cars manufactured at the time. This delightful Jaguar has been fully rebuilt and could be described as a Coombes tribute example. Photographic evidence is available to show the extent of the rebuild and it can be described as a nut and bolt total restoration. The engine was stripped, the block crack tested, crankshaft reground, the cylinder head was completely dismantled, pressure tested and fully rebuilt. The gearbox was checked and rebuilt accordingly as was the overdrive unit. The wiring loom was replaced and a reconditioned starter motor and dynamo fitted. The rear axle was stripped down and rebuilt and the brakes including the master cylinder all replaced. From a bodywork point of view the car was stripped and fully rebuilt with any corrosive areas removed and refabricated. The interior was retrimmed and the wood restored. Clearly this is a Mk. II 3.8 that is one of the finest examples available today. Finished in red with grey leather trim and sitting proudly on chrome wire wheels. The Coombes rear spats are a nice addition, giving this Jaguar a sporty look. Supplied with a V5C registration document and a comprehensive history folder, viewing is highly recommended to appreciate the quality of this Mk. II.
