Left hand drive. In 1963 the Chevrolet Motor Company pulled the cover off of its aggressively restyled and creatively renamed Corvette, the Sting Ray. The strong and streamlined model was a hit and caused production to go as high as 21,513 - a number that continued to grow in the years that followed. The new Corvette was the brainchild of the three-man team of Bill Mitchell Larry Shinoda and Zora Arkus-Duntov. Mitchell's promotion following the departure of Harley Earl ushered in a new era of design and styling and the Sting Ray's overall appearance was directly influenced by the one-off race car called the Mitchell Sting Ray, a car Mitchell himself financed throughout competition. The bodywork of the race car was masterfully carried out by designer Larry Shinoda. When Bill Mitchell saw the car for the first time, he was so impressed he instantly commissioned Shinoda to begin working on a production model - he knew then he had seen the future of the Corvette sports car. The 1963 Corvette offered here is a wonderful example of the early Sting Rays. A member of the Chambers Collection for over 20 years, this 'split-window' was subject to a restoration many years ago that paid close attention the car's originality and integrity. Previously, it was in the care of Mr. Dave Campbell of Natick, Massachusetts for an unknown number of years. With matching numbers, a fuel injected 327/360hp V8, factory knock-off rims, air conditioning, radio, clock, four speed manual transmission and manual windows, this 'spit-window' is an attractive model featuring functional options rather then the mass creature comforts otherwise available. Christie's is pleased to offer this correct and solid, no nonsense example with the original owners' guide and sales brochure. Typical of this era are cars with major body repairs, replaced engines, or otherwise 'over-restored'. The split-back is a long-legged, great looking example ready for immediate use having traveled just 43,293 miles. We suggest close inspection of this fine specimen.
