1934 Rolls-Royce 20/25 Landaulette by Barker Lot Number239 RegistrationVS 2596 Chassis NumberGNC 4 Engine NumberM5F Odometer reading13,750 miles Estimate£38,000 - £45,000 Print details Send this to a friend 4 more images By the late 1920s the trend for ever-heavier coachwork on the Rolls-Royce 20hp had inevitably had a detrimental effect on performance. Rolls-Royce’s solution was to increase the comparatively small six-cylinder engine’s capacity from just over three litres to 3,699cc which, together with a stronger crankshaft allowing increased rpm, raised its output to 25hp. Over the past eight decades the 20/25hp Rolls-Royce has earned an enviable reputation of being among the most dependable, satisfying and highest quality pre-war models of all. Produced from 1929 to 1935, it represented the marque’s determined effort to move away from massive formal cars, routinely chauffeur-driven, to the newly fashionable owner-driver market for the wealthy private owner-driver. Various detail improvements were made to the 20/25 during its seven year production life including rises in compression ratio in 1930 and 1932; the latter year also saw the introduction of synchromesh for the third and fourth gear ratios, thermostatically controlled radiator grille shutters, a one-shot centralised lubrication system and an electric fuel gauge. This delightfully handsome Rolls-Royce was bodied by the respected coachbuilder Barker in the style of a Pullman Landaulette and registered on 15th May 1934. The long chassis offers seven seats if required, the passenger compartment of this 20/25 is delightful and has a division offering privacy from the driver/chauffeur. The front being trimmed in tan leather and the rear in beige velour, it is common for these limousines to have cloth trim to the rear for additional comfort. The cockpit area of this fabulous vehicle is laid out in a simplistic manner with all gauges easy to read and aesthetically pleasing. The current vendor is the sixth owner and has enjoyed the car since 2012; the only problem he ever experienced was a charging problem which was easily rectified. Described as driving as she should and turning heads wherever she goes, this Barker bodied Rolls-Royce 20/25 is supplied with a V5C registration document and a small history folder. Such examples have once again been in demand of late, with the marketplace recognising the superb value they offer. A particularly regal example such as this is sure to continue the trend.
