Y A GEORGE III BURR YEW AND HAREWOOD 'HARLEQUIN' PEMBROKE TABLE ATTRIBUTED TO INCE & MAYHEW, CIRCA 1780 The sliding panel to the top opening to reveal a finished interior and compartment rising up on a release action 72cm high, 55cm wide (unextended), 70cm deep This is a rare example having the sophistication of the concealed rising compartment. This finely veneered Pembroke table can be confidently attributed to the Golden Square firm of Mayhew and Ince based on the use of burr yew-wood as a large scale veneer, 'the only wholly idiosyncratic veneer wood the firm used and possibly unique to Mayhew and Ince among London cabinet-makers of this date' (P. Macquoid & R.Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, pp. 589-593). They supplied a veneered yew-wood commode to Sir Brook Bridges of Goodnestone Park, Kent, that was exhibited in Treasures from Kent Houses, Royal Museum, Canterbury, September - October 1984, no. 57. Similar burr yew Pembroke tables attributed to Ince and Mayhew were sold Christies London, Important English Furniture, 13th Nov 1997, Lot 85 £41,100 and The Collection of Mr and Mrs Jack Steinberg, 19th May 2016, lot 36, £37,500. Please note: Dreweatts have applied for a de minimis exemption licence for the ivory in this lot (Ref: 9RQHDB9J) Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use Some old splits and minor chips as expected for age. some wear and old loss to the painted/ ebonised surface of the edge of the top of the table as expected for age. The 'pop up' action of the rising section (of pigeon holes and small drawers) in working order. The sliding block beneath the top pull forward to cause the compartment to be raised. The string forming part of the action has been replaced (as expected) in order to enable the action to operate reliably. Handles and lock all appear original. Lacking key. Drawer linings and lining to interior beneath the sliding top are all solid mahogany. Some minor old repairs as expected for age but minimal. Casters are all original and matching. Operating drawer to one side and false drawer front opposing finished equally to operating drawer and with original matching handles. No old breaks to legs. Basically in good order overall. Please refer to all additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer
