Y A FINE EARLY VICTORIAN GILT BRASS MOUNTED ROSEWOOD SMALL FIVE-GLASS TRAVELLING/CARRIAGE TIMEPIECE CHRISTIE, LONDON, CIRCA 1850 The four columnar pillar single chain fusee movement with Harrison's maintaining power, the gilt platform with under-slung English lever escapement regulated by sprung split bimetallic balance and with jewelled endstone to the fine foliate scroll engraved balance cock, the backplate with knurled hand adjustment screw to upper left and signed Christie, Cannon St'. London to centre, the 3.75 by 3 inch engraved gilt brass Roman numeral dial with engine-turned centre and signed CHRISTIE, LONDON at twelve o'clock, with blued steel fleur-de-lys hands and fine foliate scroll engraved infill to upper and loser margins, the case with faceted-baton centred scroll cast hinged gilt brass carrying handle and bevelled rectangular glass to top, above projecting slender cavetto moulded cornice and hinged front with rectangular glazed dial aperture incorporating canted gilt insert to interior, the sides with thick rectangular bevelled glass panels and the rear with glazed rectangular door set within the frame of the case, the base with ogee outline apron over cavetto moulded skirt and adjustable gilt disc feet. 20.25cm (8ins) high with handle down, 13cm (5.125ins) wide, 12cm (4.75ins) deep. Provenance: Purchased at Bonhams, London, sale of FINE CLOCKS 6th July 2106 (lot 128) for £7,500. William Christie is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2 as born in 1825 and working in London 1839-81. Other sources note William Christie as working in partnership with Thomas De la Salle from premises in Cannon Street, London, until 1845. Condition Report: Movement is in fine original working condition. The dial is in immaculate condition. The case is in fine condition with faults limited to very minor shrinkage and edge wear.
