(x) Europe Austria Empire Moravia 1852 (13 Dec.) large and impressive wrapper from the Moravian bishopric to Nicholas Wiseman, the Archbishop of Westminster; bearing an almost complete impression of the bishop's seal in red wax. A magnificent three-colour franking of the first issue of Austria with 1850-54 3kr. red (2), 6kr. brown (9) and 9kr, dull blue (5), the margins are generally good to large with multiples of 6kr.(8) and 9kr.(4), all tied by "Olmütz/13 dec" datestamps, bears straight-line "recom." in black British agency in Aachen crowned "registered" in red and large "P." in circle plus London Paid c.d.s. (17.12) and some manuscript figures. A stunning and highly important quadruple rate cover, the strip of eight 6kr. is a great rarity. This is one of the most important registered covers known. It was originally in the Vatican archives and given by the Pope to be sold in a charity auction in the 1940's provenance: Vivien Sussex, March 2002 exhibited: MonacoPhil, 2019 Cardinal Wiseman became the first Archbishop of Westminster upon the re-establishment of the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales in 1850. Note that the weight is marked as 1 5/10 Unze ( the rarely used Vienna ounce weight. This pays quadruple rate of 105kr. plus 21kr. registration fee
