WWI First World War Medal Group - 2nd Lieutenant Wesley Milum Gibson of the Northumberland Fusiliers - an incredible WWI First World War medal group awarded to Gibson, comprising; his Military Cross and Bar, War Medal (impressed 2. Lieut W. M. Gibson ), Victory Medal with Oak Leaf (impressed 2. Lieut W. M. Gibson) - all with their original ribbons. Supplied with a copy of his medal card, and a copy of his mention in dispatches from The London Gazette 18th July 1917, and a photograph of Gibson. An impressive medal group. Taken from the war diary of 20th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. 2Lt W.M Gibson was awarded his 1st MC for the leadership he showed whilst leading the right flank of a Trench Raid on 11 Dec 1916 near Armentieres. This is confirmed through entries made in the Battalions War Diary. The CO of the Battalion also notes on 30th June 1917 that “2Lt W.M Gibosn was awarded Military Cross in recognition of services rendered at ARMENTIERES. A report on the raid at Armentieres submitted the day after was submitted by 2Lt R.A Browning who mentions“The right blocking party accounted for 4 Germans who had fired at us as we advanced through the gap. One German gave himself up to Mr.Gibson shouting “Kamerade” He was also singled out by his Brigade Commander for his part in the raid (“It will be observed that owing to the fact that the enemy had repaired their wire and placed Knife rests in position, the party under 2/Lt R.A Browning had to surmount considerable obstacles in addition to the wired-up burrow ditch. The manner in which this was done reflects particular credit, in my opinion, on the leading of the two Officers of this party, viz. 2Lt R.A Browning and 2Lt W.M Gibson. Recommendations follow.” Bar to the Military Cross London Gazette 18th July 1917 The London Gazette 'For conspicuous Gallantry and devotion to duty. during the advance he showed courage and coolness in rallying his men under heavy fire. His personal example and disregard for danger largely contribute to the reaching of the final objective On 30 May 1917 the Battalion War diary states “the undermentioned awards were given for good work done on April 9th 1917”. 2nd Lt Gibson is listed confirming that his Bar was awarded for his role in the Battalions attack as part of the action which took place on the first day of the Battle of Arras. His MiD and SWB are all recorded on his MiC He served in WW2 with a barrage balloon Squadron in Sheffield where he rose to the rank of Wing Commander. I believe this would entitle him to a War medal and a Defence medal however this would need to be confirmed.
