Title: [Works. i.e.]: The Argonaut Manuscript Limited Edition of Frank Norris' Works Author: Norris, Frank Place: Garden City Publisher: Doubleday, Doran and Co. Date: 1928 Description: 10 volumes. Gravure frontispiece from photograph by Arnold Genthe 21.5x14.5 cm. (8½x5¾"), full gray-brown levant morocco tooled in gilt on the covers and spines, raised bands, red levant morocco doublures tooled in gilt, moiré silk free endleaves, top edges gilt. No. 5 of 245 sets of the Argonaut Manuscript Edition With original sheet of ink manuscript by Frank Norris from McTeague, inserted in front of Vol. I (The Octopus). It is a 16x10" sheet of paper which folds, and has the original ink smears and fingerprints of the author. The set consists of the author's complete works, including The Octopus, The Pit, McTeague, etc., with introductions by H.L. Mencken, Theodore Dreiser, Christopher Morley, et al. Volume 10 represents the first edition of previously uncollected articles and stories. Born in San Francisco, Frank Norris (1870-1902) was an important figure in California letters. His writings contained themes of social consciousness as well as action and adventure. His death at age 32 was caused by peritonitis from a ruptured appendix. BAL 15049, 15048 (Vol. 10). Bookplates of Frank S. Peck on the front flyleaves following the silk endleaves. Lot Amendments Condition: Spines faded a bit to brown, fading to margins of the silk endleaves; near fine.
