(A few shoulder notes slightly shaved, lacks blanks A1 and A8.) 19th-century brown morocco, edges gilt. Provenance : William Arden (signature dated 1626 on Ff2v, and A1v of third work presenting the book to) -- John Jordain (gift inscription on A1v) -- purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, New York, 17 April 1969. Exhibited : Grolier Club, 'This powerfull rime,' 1975, no. 10. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Grolier Wither to Prior 1032; Pforzheimer 1083; STC 25911. [ Bound with :] Wither's Motto . London: Printed for John Marriott, 1621. Engraved title by R. E[lstrack], with explanation leaf present before title. Variant edition, with sheets A and C in same setting as STC 25928.5, and sheets D and F as in STC 25928.7; see Pforzheimer 1084. [ Bound with :] Faire-Virtue, the Mistresse of Philarete . London: Printed for John Grismand, 1622. (Lacking signatures 0-P 8 , containing 'A Miscelany of Epigrams,' [supplied in manuscript from a 1633 edition in a later hand, see below].) FIRST EDITION, third state title, which is the rarest according to Pforzheimer (citing the Hagen and Huntington copies being the only recorded examples). Grolier Wither to Prior 1031; Pforzheimer 1082; STC 25903. [ Bound with :] "To the small Edition fo Faire Virtue [1633]...the following 'Miscelany' is added" [manuscript title]. 32 pp. manuscript transcriptions of the 'Miscelany of Epigrams' at end of Faire-Virtue , as well as transcriptions of prefixes to Fidelia . Early 19th-century.
