Wim Delvoye St. Stephanus III 1989-1992 Stained glass, mirror, enamel spray paint and steel frame. 81 ¾ x 118 x 44 in. (206.4 x 299.7 x 111.7 cm).
Provenance Acquired directly from the artist. Literature Delfina and L. Derycke, Wim Delvoye Volume 1, London and Ghent, 1996; Manchester City Galleries and Sperone Westwater, eds., Wim Delvoye Gothic Works, New York and Ghent, 2002, p. 93 (illustrated) Catalogue Essay “The emphasis on tradition was also a way for the reigning Catholic parties to react against the rise of left-wing culture in the public domain. Delvoye already incorporated this type of painted glass into his series of parodies on football goals.” (Manchester City Galleries and Sperone Westwater, eds., Gothic works: Wim Delvoye New York and Ghent, 2002) The present lot St. Stephanus III, 1989-1992 is part of a series Delvoye dedicates to the Saint who is reputed to be the first martyr killed with stones. There is a distinct irony in placing this title to a work which juxtaposes a display of stained glass tiles within the netting of a soccer goal, as if to poke fun at the idea of throwing stones at such a venerable and delicate object.
