FIRST EDITION of the authoritative history of North Carolina. Born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, Hugh Williamson was a physician and polymath who served as one of North Carolina's delegates to the Federal Constitutional Convention. His History was written during his retirement from Congress while living in New York. He notes in his preface that little had been written directly about the history of North Carolina, and that he used as his chief sources public records, letter books, and manuscripts in the possession of the oldest families in the state.
