Read more William Scott Lot 18 - 'Still Life on White with Beans (1978)' Estimate: €100,000 - €150,000 In 1978, an exhibition of paintings by William Scott was held at the Moos Gallery in Toronto. Founded by Walter Moos, the gallery was responsible for introducing leading European artists to Canada, including Karel Appel, Victor Vasarely and Antoní Tapies. A keen promoter of Scott, Moos had several original works by the artist in his collection. Still Life on White with Beans was one of the works shown in Toronto. A large painting, it depicts, in an elemental and simple way, a white oval form set against a pale grey background-suggesting a plate on a table. On the plate are irregular long forms; several green beans, with more beans spilling out onto the table top. Other works by Scott shown in Toronto in 1978 include Permutation 3- White. Although dating from relatively late in William Scott's career, Still Life on White with Beans contains the essential elements of abstraction for which he became renowned. The square format suited his search for simplicity. Colour has been reduced to the simplest monochrome tones, of grey, white and green. Skirting warily the domains of abstraction and representational art, as his style developed, Scott remained, in his own words, an 'individualist'. His still-lives, a genre he returned to consistently throughout his life, are essays in the pure tactile and visceral qualities of paint. Born in Greenock, Scotland, at the age of eleven Scott moved with his family to his father's home town of Enniskillen in Co. Fermanagh. After studying at what is now the Belfast College of Art, and the Royal Academy Schools in London, he lived in France in 1938-1939, setting up an art school at Pont-Aven. With the onset of WWII, Scott moved briefly to Dublin before settling in England. Having volunteered to join the army, he served from 1942 to 1946 as a cartographer in the Royal Engineers, where he learned the technique of lithographic printing. During the Blitz, he had solo exhibitions with the Leger Gallery in London. Although Scott's work since the early 1930s and 1940s was predominantly based on still-lives of simple domestic objects, in the 1950s he moved towards pure abstract painting. In 1972 the Tate Gallery staged a retrospective exhibition of his work. Since the early 1930'a, perhaps more than any other Irish artist of the twentieth century (apart from Jack Yeats), Scott's work has been exhibited worldwide. In 1953, as well as showing at the Sao Paulo Bienal, he was introduced by Martha Jac
