lot of 5. Four of these are addressed to Col. S.W. Fordyce (Esq.) of St. Louis, MO. Includes TLS by W. McKinley (1843-1901), 1 p. on personal letterhead stationery, 5.5 x 9", 31 January 1896. PLUS TLS by McKinley, 1p. on personal stationery, 8.5 x 11", 29 Jan. 1896, Canton, OH. McKinley enclosed a list of friends and supporters (not included with letter here) he thought Fordyce might want to contact. PLUS TLS as Governor of Ohio (1891-1895), 1p. on Ohio Executive Department stationery, 8 x 10.5", 16 December 1895, Columbus. Stationery has "Crane's Japanese Linen" watermark. PLUS TLS by John Hay (1838 - 1905) as Secretary of State (1897-1905), 1p. on State Department stationery, 8 x 10", 7 November 1898, Washington. Letter is to Diplomatic and Consular Officers as reference for Rene Papin (see Lot 479). AND ALS by Adlai Stevenson (1835 - 1914) as Vice President (1893-1897), 2pp. on Vice President's stationery, 25 Oct 1894, Bloomington, IL. John Hay is known as much for his writing and poetry as for his public service. He was Lincoln's assistant secretary, served for a while in the field, achieving breveted colonel rank, served in Paris, Vienna, and Madrid in diplomatic service, became an editorial writer for the "Tribune" in New York, then moved to Cleveland where his political career began in earnest. His skill as Secretary of State was enormously helpful during the Spanish American War, and he was kept in that role until his death by Roosevelt after McKinley's assassination. Adlai Stevenson spent most of his career in law and politics. He seems to have been successful about every other attempt (elected to 44th Congress, not 45th, served in 46th, not 47th, elected VP with Cleveland '92, not 1900), a family tradition that carried on to his great-grandson, Adlai III. Both men had great public service careers, but getting elected proved difficult. Condition:First has light toning, usual folds, else excellent. Second has folds, light soil around edges, still very good. Third has folds, light toning around where the attached note was, 2 staple holes for same at top. Very good. Fourth has folds, toned area on verso, some wrinkling. Still very good. Fifth has folds, light toning. Very good+.
