WILLIAM CURTIS (1746-1799) The Botanical Magazine; or, Flower-Garden Displayed. London: 1787-1817. Vols.1-44 only and General Indexes to... the first forty-two volumes bound in 25 volumes, 8° (236 x 140mm). Engraved portrait of Curtis, 2 uncoloured plates, 2019 hand-coloured engraved plates , 103 folding. (Occasional light browning or spotting). Contemporary tree calf, the flat spines gilt with red morocco lettering-pieces (some spines chipped, a few joints weak or split). Provenance : Battie-Wrightson family (Cusworth Hall, nr.Doncaster, sale Hollis & Webb, 23 October 1952, part of lot 2171). [ With ]: eight original parts from the same work, 1817, 1818-19, 1984, 48 hand-coloured engraved plates, and six coloured plates, wrappers; the lot sold, as a periodical, not subject to return. FIRST EDITION. A significant selection from probably the most famous of all botanical periodicals, a publication which continues today. Cf. Satfleu & Cowan 1290; cf. Nissen BB 2350. (33)
