Beschreibung:

William Brocas (c.1794-1868) View at Innishannon, Co. Cork Oil on canvas, 71 x 99cm (28 x 39'') Signed and dated indistinctly 1861/4 The third son of Henry Brocas Snr., William was born about 1794. Walter Strickland records that he was an exhibitor at the Society of Artists in 1809 and 1812 and at the Royal Hibernian Academy, reasonably consistently from 1828 to 1863. Works exhibited there were a variety of portraits, rural genre scenes and landscapes. As well as such works he worked as a horse and animal portraitist, though Crookshank and Glin opined that his animals 'are sometimes rather naïve'. His landscapes usually have a strong genre element while the present work depicts casual fishermen on the banks of the Bandon River just south of Innishannon Bridge, with the village houses visible through trees to the right. The composition of the painting and treatment of the subject displays the influence of an earlier generation of Irish landscape artists such as Barret, Mullins and O'Connor.
