Beschreibung:

Mountain sunrise (presumably Gunung Agung, Bali) signed 'Imandt.' (lower right) oil on canvas, 72x105 cm Willem Jean Frederic Imandt was born in 1882 in St. Jansteen, The Netherlands. At an early age Willem was already showing artistic talents, but it was after his uncle returned from The Indies full of stories about ‘the Netherlands beyond the horizon’, that Willem must have started to dream about volcanoes, mountains and banyan trees, which he would later depict in his paintings. It is for these beautiful Indonesian landscapes that Imandt is known, just like his contemporaries, Leo Eland (1884-1952), Carel Lodewijk Dake Jr. (1886-1946), Gerard Pieter Adolfs (1897-1968) and Ernest Dézentjé (1884-1972). Imandt however differs from these by his use of strong pastel colourite. His highly artistic and colourful work depicts the beautiful nature of the Preanger and elsewhere. A reviewer wrote: “It is difficult not to wax poetic when seeing this part of the world, as Imandt depicted it. The typical atmosphere of the tropics and the bright light that brings out a special depth in all colours: the deep blue of the tropical skies, the lively green of the sea. Imandt painted it with great mastery. The East comes alive when we see it through the painterly eyes of Imandt.” He passed away in The Hague in 1967.
