WHITNEY, Geffrey (ca 1548-ca 1601). Choice of Emblemes, and other Devises. Leiden: Francis Raphelengius at the Plantin Press, 1586.
WHITNEY, Geffrey (ca 1548-ca 1601). Choice of Emblemes, and other Devises. Leiden: Francis Raphelengius at the Plantin Press, 1586. 2 parts in one, 4 o (205 x 155 mm). Printer's device on title, full-page woodcut arms of the dedicatee, Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester on title verso, Leicester crest on part-title, and 248 woodcut emblems within type-ornament border, type-ornament tail-pieces. (Lightly darkening and staining, a few repaired tears, lacks blank f4.) Red morocco gilt by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with the arms of Viscount Cobham. Provenance : Viscount Cobham (binding); acquired from Hofmann & Freeman, 1974. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ENGLISH ILLUSTRATED EMBLEM BOOK, a work "certainly known to Shakespeare" (Douce), and one which served as a model to subsequent English emblem writers. As Whitney states on the title-page, the work is largely a compilation from Alciati, Paradin, Sambucus, Junius and Faerni, but 23 poems are Whitney's own compositions. It was thus a chief source for the transmission of foreign emblematic literature, which in turn influenced the decorative arts of the period in furniture motifs, engraved gems, and tapestries and embroidery. It is probably the only English book issued by the Plantin press, and owes its publication at Leiden to Whitney's stay there and his relationship with numerous Leiden luminaries. The woodcuts had previously appeared in other emblem books published by Plantin. P.M. Daly, The English Emblem Tradition, vol.I, 1988; Freeman, English Emblem Books 233, 56-61; Grolier, Langland to Wither, 260; Hayward 21; Landwehr, Emblem Books, 743 (incorrectly collating preliminary quires); Luborsky & Ingram, English Illustrated Books, 1536-1603, 25438; STC 25438, with the less common variant on **3r, line 18, ending 'and', and the more common setting of quires O-P with "Ex damno alterius" on p.119. Fact and Fantasy 42.
