Some light toning to extremities, but covers generally fresh, jacket with spine toned, and panels faintly toned, two short tears to tail edge of rear panel, front flap with lower corner clipped, though not affecting price, an excellent copy overall. First edition, first issue with no mention of Caldecott Medal, $3.50 price, "Harper & Row, Publishers / 40-80 / 163" in the front flap, three paragraphs on each of the flaps. Sendak's story of the adventures of the mischievous and energetic youth Max won the prestigious Caldecott Medal in March of 1964. Remaining copies of the first edition were abrubtly recalled and altered with the Caldecott Medal sticker on the front panel. Hanrahan A58. See illustration.
