Coues, Elliott. History of the Expedition under the Command of Lewis and Clark,...performed during the Years 1804-5-6, but Order of the Government of the United States. A New Edition.... New York: Francis P. Harper, 1893. 4 vols., No. 336 of 1000 copies, on Fine Book Paper according to limitation page. 8vo, green cloth with gilt spines; Vol. 1: cxxxii, 352pp, 2 folding facsimile letters, one from Lewis, one from Clark; vol. 2, vi, pp 353-820; vol. 3, vi, pp 821-1298; vol. 4, v, 5 small maps, 2 folding family lineages for Lewis and Clark, pp 1299-1364 (index), pocket in rear board with 3 loose maps, 24 x 35 in. map of N. America, 13.5 x 30 in. map of route from original publication, and 15 x 31 in. color map of new interpretation of their route based on Coues' research. This editor reprinted the original Lewis and Clark volumes, by then approaching a century in age, with a few updated notes and a revised map of the route. By this time, the great "Age of Exploration" was over, the West was "closing," the nation had celebrated its centennial and was over its "growth stage" and settling into maturity. Yet the "romance" of the West not only remained, but in a sense was increasing, with the popularity of Wild West Shows and the great Western artists, as good a time as any to "revisit" what many consider the greatest exploratory expedition in U.S. history. Condition: All boards show expected shelf wear to spines and corners. All also have extensive pencil notes in margins and some underlines (previous owner read with pencil in hand). Vol. 1 with a few front pages loose, all present. Vol. 3, last leaf loose. First vol. binding breaking down; second, a couple problem spots; third, tight except for last page. Overall, in fairly good condition. Loose maps with only a toned back panel, a few separations at intersection of folds, otherwise in very good or better condition.
