WESTERN ASIATIC OLD BABYLONIAN CYLINDER SEAL WITH ROYAL WORSHIPPING SCENE AND GOD AMURRU 18th-16th century BC A haematite cylinder seal with a figure in royal posture, wearing a pointed had, faces the god Amurru (Sumerian Martu, representing a personification of the nomadic peoples of the desert, in the Bible called Amorites), who holds in the right hand his crook symbol; between them is a small man, holding a dead gazelle at the height of his hip, beneath these three persons four gazelles move one after the other to the right. 9.32 grams, 24mm (1"). Condition Fine condition. Provenance From a North London collection; acquired before 1992. Literature Cf. von der Osten, H. H. Ancient Oriental Seals in the Collection of Mr. Edward T.
