WESLEY, Charles (1757-1834). Autograph manuscript signed and dated (at foot of p.7, 'C. Wesley 1781'), of a 'Sonata per il Cembalo' in F minor, in three movements, marked Allegro, Larghetto and Presto, together with, on p.8, a sketch (the majority cancelled) of the theme for a Rondeau in E, in six systems of two staves on 8 pages, oblong 4to (233 x 300mm) . Charles Wesley, son of the hymn-writer of the same name, and nephew of the founder of Methodism, was a child prodigy who later, in spite of his father's efforts to discourage him from a musical career, became an accomplished organist, ending his career as organist at St Marylebone. His brother, the composer Samuel Wesley, remarked of his extremely conservative compositional style that he was an 'obstinate Handelian'.
