A PATENT LETTER SIGNED BY WASHINGTON AND JEFFERSON. Jefferson, himself an inventor, presided over the Patent Office in his capacity as Secretary of State. Only the jurat portion of this patent remains, indicating the President's and the Secretary of State's signatures made at Philadelphia in 1791, the second year of the Washington administration, when relations were still cordial between these fellow Virginians. The tumultuous events of the French Revolution, the debates over American neutrality in the wars between Britain and France, and growing factional warfare at home would turn these crucial Founders against each other after 1796.
