Important. War Against Great Britain. [Burlington, Vermont: 1812] Printed broadside (8 1/2 x 6 1/2 in.; 215 x 163 mm). Signed in type by Joseph Bloomfield ("Gen. Bloomfield); light stains. Matted, framed, and glazed. The consignor has independently obtained a letter of authenticity from PSA that will accompany the lot. A rare broadside announcing the Declaration of War in 1812 "The die is cast....the Senate of the United have this day decided the question after ten days debate, by a majority of 19 to 13....WAR therefore is inevitable..." At the beginning of the War of 1812, Joseph Bloomfield—then governor of New Jersey—was commissioned as a brigadier general in the United States Army, and served on the United States-Canada border until 15 June 1815. For the entire war, Burlington, Vermont, located on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, a mere 40 miles south of the border with British-held Canada, hosted an extensive American military base. Our records locate no other copy of this broadside having been offered at auction.
