Wallace (Alfred Russel). The Malay Archipelago: the Land of the Orang-utan, and the Bird of Paradise. A narrative of travel with studies of man and nature, 2 volumes, 1st edition, London: Macmillan and Co., 1869, wood-engraved frontispieces, title vignettes, 2 folding maps, single-page maps and wood-engraved illustrations, single-page advertisement and 52 pp. advertisements dated December 1868 bound at rear of volume I, small marginal water stain to a few plates, a few minor spots, contemporary ownership signatures, binders tickets to front pastedowns, original green cloth, upper covers stamped with a gilt vignette of an orangutan, spines lettered in gilt with a bird of paradise vignette, cloth slightly rippled and a little rubbed to the joints and edges, 8vo (Quantity: 2) Norman 2176. 'On the basis of artistic format, literary style and scientific merit it is clearly it is one of the finest scientific travel books ever written' DSB). Wallace spent nearly eight years on many expeditions in the area, covering some 14,000 miles and collecting over 125,000 specimens, many new to science. He independently conceived the theory of evolution through natural selection, and dedicates the book to Charles Darwin 'not only as a token of personal esteem and friendship but also to express my deep admiration for his genius and his works.'
