Terra Nova Ocenunus Occidentalis [(titled on verso) Oceani occidentalis seu Terrae Novae tabula.
Lyon: 1535. Woodcut map of the Atlantic Ocean taking in North Africa, Western Europe, Brazil, the Carribbean, Gulf of Mexico and Florida, the seas decorated with a striated wave pattern, text block with text on Columbus's discovery in 1492, South America decorated with images of natives and an opossum (as reported by Vespucci), the verso with decorated woodcut borders enclosing two pages of letterpress, decorated woodcut initial. Condition : neatly repaired tear at lower centerfold, some fading of the paper color. Window mount. Acquisition : sale, Sotheby’s New York, 16 January 1998, lot 213, $5,750. A fine attractive map of the Atlantic and new discovered Americas, based on the Geography of Waldseemueller. Laurent Fries, an ardent follower of Waldseemueller, issued a series of slightly reduced -size examples of the maps taken from the Ptolemy-Waldseemueller Geographia of Strassburg 1513. Fries issued his new Geographia twice at Strassburg in 1522 and 1525, then this Lyon edition in 1535, and finally a Viennese edition in 1541. Burden 4.
