Iournael ofte beschrijvinghe van de wonderlijcke reyse (...) inde jaren hy bezuyden de Straet van Magellanes een nieuwe passagie ofte strate, tot inde groote Zuyd-zee, ontdeckt, ende voort den geheelen aerdt-kloot omgezeylt heeft. Wat eylanden/ vreemde volcken en wonderlijcke avontueren hem ontmoet zijn. Hoorn, J.J. Deutel, "laetsten Druck", 56p., p. engr. maps/ charts (incl. worldmap), (of double-p. plates, half-p. woodcut ill. on title-p., ill. of a flying fish and modern marbled wr., sm. 4to. - Two plates lacking (supplied in photostat). Sm. tears/ worn spots in fore-edge margin (restored w. thin Japanese); sl. waterstained/ thumbed in (mainly blank) margins; = Tiele Tiele Mémoire Sabin Alden/ Landis II, Hill (first ed. ; cf. Cat. NHSM p. Howgego S "The account of Dutch navigator Willem Schouten's voyage around the world, during which Cape Horn was discovered and rounded for the first time. Cape Horn was named for Schouten's native town, Hoorn, whose leading citizens had joined together under merchant Isaac le Maire to form the Compagnie Australe. Le Maire chose Schouten, an experienced navigator who had already made three voyages to the East Indies, to lead this search for an alternate route from the Atlantic to the Pacific. (...). The ship Eendracht, while crossing the Pacific, discovered some of the Tuamotu Islands, the Hoorn Islands, the Schouten Islands, and visited New Guinea, the Moluccas, and Batavia. When Schouten and Le Maire arrived in Ternate, their ship was confiscated by the Dutch East India Company, which had a monopoly of trade in that quarter of the globe. The Dutch governor of Batavia sent them back to the Netherlands with Joris van Spilbergen, who was in port, and who had recently attacked Brazil, Chile, and Peru." (Hill).
