Turner, Dr. William. Edinburgh: W. & A.K. Johnston, n.d., but ca 1903 (founding date of U.S. distributor A.J. Nystrom). Eight chromolithographed plates, 22.5 x 28.5 in. linen-backed sheets: Bones, Ligaments, Muscles, Heart & Arteries, Veins & Lungs, Organs of Digestion, Nervous System, and Organs of Sense and Voice. Items on charts lettered and numbered, but does not have associated key. Held on wood roller with metal ends. Last sheet (unbacked, plain?) missing, but it would not have contained a chart (might have had a key). These eight charts were some of the first chromolithographed wall charts intended not just for faculty use, but for the student in the classroom. They also include some of the first illustrations of microscopic anatomy, which had picked up in popularity a few decades earlier. Thus the bone page includes a transverse ground bone section and a vertical section showing blood supply; there is a microscopic section of muscle fiber bundles; a view of taste buds on the tongue; etc. There are also cross-sections (not microscopic) of important structures, such as the valves and arteries of the heart (both coronal and transverse); vertical section of a tooth; dissected section of a vein; etc. Dr. Turner served at the University of Edinburgh for 62 years, nearly 50 as an anatomy demonstrator. A lovely set of charts in better condition than many we have been able to locate. Condition: Sheets generally toned, some paper loss, as is typical on wall maps and charts, especially on edges.
