Nuits de la Zone Torride Author: Combier, C[yprien] Place: Paris Publisher: Arthus Bertrand Date: [1864] Description: xvi, 544 pp. Folding lithographed map (hand-colored in outline) in the back, as issued. 8½x5½, original wrappers bound in modern red cloth (lacks original rear wrapper cover), spine rebacked with upper half using the same red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, hinges reinforced, top edge gilt. First Edition. Inscribed and signed in French by the author in the year of publication on the half-title page, dated May 28, 1864. French Merchant Combier touched at La Paz, Loreto and the Isla de Carmen, to assemble a cargo of hides. He describes the rancho life during this time and the work provides much information about the products, geology and geography of Sonora. Includes the often missing folding map, titled "Carte de la Sonora" with the north most section Mexico along the Gulf of California (Sonora) hand-colored in outline, plus adjacent surroundings present including parts of Baja California, California and modern-day Arizona and New Mexico (with Apache territories identified). Sabin 14925; Barrett 555; Hill pp.59-60. Lot Amendments Condition: Formlery in the John Crerar Library with perforated and small ink stamp on the title page, an indelible ink and rubberstamped call-numbers on the first Preface page. Light edge wear and rubbing to exterior; small tape repairs to original front wrapper (which is a bit loose), mild foxing throughout; Crerar's bookplate dated 1894 on front pastedown; very good and scarce with the original map.
