VINCENT DE PAUL, Saint (1581-1660). Document signed ("V. De Paul, Cur," with paraph), Dombes, 1617. 2 pages, small 4to, 215 x 155 mm. (8 x 6.1/8), faint circular ink-stamp and ink inscription in a minute hand, dated 1842 (in blank portion of page 2), tipped to a larger sheet, in French., accompanied by transcription and notes, dated 1839 and a letter concerning the document, 1842. A lengthy legal document relating to the local parish, commencing with the formula "Lequel servis annuelet perpetuel dedict ... A promis de prometre par son permanente obligeant corps...payer ausii de Srs Cures pretres et societtaires et a leurs successeurs..." At the end it is dated "en l'eglise de Saint Andre," and signed by six individuals including St. Vicent de Paul. RARE. Only three documents bearing the signature of this important Catholic saint have appeared in the last two decades at auction; the most recent a fragmentary theological letter in the Doheny Collection (sale, Christie's,18 October 1988, lot 1636, $8,000). St. Vincent, founder of the Lazarite order, at the date of this letter had just become curate at Chtillon-ls-Dombes, where with financial support from the Countess of Joigny he founded his first "confrerie de charit" to minister to the infirm and destitute. He was canonized in 1737.
