Victorian red leather covered Government despatch box belonging to Rt. Hon. Viscount Joselyn (1816-1854) - the box of conventional rectangular form with embossed 'Viscount Joselyn' to lid (handle missing) green velvet lined interior with Bramah lock (broken), 46cm wide x 31cm deep x 15.5cm deep. Viscount Joselyn served in the first Opium War as Military Secretary to Lord Saltourn. He was MP for King's Lynn from 1842 to 1854 and served under Sir Robert Peel as joint Secretary to the Board of Control between 1845-1846. He was Colonel commandant of the East Essex Militia and died aged 38 having contracted cholera whilst staying with his regiment at the Tower of London CONDITION REPORT Sound original condition, some losses to leather and scuffs - top handle missing and no key
