Victorian Burr-Walnut Pedestal Desk Howard and Sons, London, last quarter of the 19th century The leather lined rectangular top above three mahogany lined frieze drawers, the back veneered and paneled, raised on bracket feet, the center drawer with printed partial paper label EASY CHAIR. Height 28 3/4 inches (73 cm), width 53 1/2 inches (1.35 m), depth 27 1/2 inches (69.7 cm). The firm of Howard and Sons was established in 1820 by John Howard in London, trading as a 'Cabinet Manufacturer'. In 1875 they established their premises at 25, 26 & 27 Berners Street, London, where they were to stay until 1935. Exhibiting at their second exhibition in 1862, they won a prize for a suite of library furniture. C
Good restored condition, nice quality, age cracks and scuffs to leather writing surface, handles later, four drawers with plugs to keyholes, top left side of left pedestal with losses, repairs and inpainting to oak moldings and drawer dividers, loss to left front foot of right pedestal, veneer losses to corners on backs of pedestals, with some inpainting.
