(18 5/8 x 12 3/4in.), slightly later speckled boards, red morocco gilt spine label, red edges, worn, title-leaf creased, some slight dampstaining to lower blank margins, some spotting and foxing. FIRST EDITION, aquatint frontispiece, printed in colors and finished by hand with engraved leaf of explanation, 35 plates, 34 of them in two slightly variant forms: line engravings with key lettering to the text and color-printed with hand finishing; plate 18 in line only (a copy from Blumenbach, De basi encephali ), all by Mlle. Briceau (later Mme. Angelique Allais); half-title, title-page, dedication page to Louis XVI, 54 pages "Discours" ([1-]54), 111 pages "Explication des planches" ([1-]111) with 5 fly-titles, 69 pages "Vocabulaire anatomique" ([55-]123). Rare. Brunet V 1176; Waller 9953. Provenance : Juan Carlos Ahumada, bookplate; library stamp on half-title; the present owner.
