VERGILIUS, Polydorus (ca 1470-1555). Adagiorum opus. Basel: Johann Froben, June 1525. 2 o (316 x 213 mm). Woodcut architectural border on title by Hans Holbein woodcut printer's device on last leaf. (Title with upper margin renewed, not affecting border.) Contemporary English blind-tooled and panelled calf over wooden boards, stamped with ornaments and roll containing portcullis, castle, pomegranate, fleur-de-lis, rose and lion [see Weale 185(1)] (rebacked, straps replaced). Provenance: R. Wolverton (contemporary signature on title); George Dunn (1865-1912, Woolley Hall bookplate); T. M. Clement (bookplate); acquired from Chiswick Book Shop, 1966. Polydore Vergil was born at Urbino and went to England and was naturalized there in 1510. He became Archdeacon of Wells and wrote a history of England. The first edition of Proverbiorum Libellus (Venice, 1498) was retitled in later editions Adagiorum Liber , and is often known as the Adagia , was a collection of Latin proverbs printed in many 16th century editions. It was the first such collection printed, the original edition preceding the similar Adagia of Erasmus by two years. Holbein's border incorporates Cleopatra, Dionysus and other classical figures. Large woodcut "Vita Aulica" border by Ambrosius Holbein woodcut initials by Urs Graf and Holbein, woodcut printer's device on last leaf. (Some worming at end affecting some letters, repaired on final leaf.) Vergil's book on the "Inventors of Things" is compiled from classical mythology and early histories. In it, he tries to give the origin of almost everything in daily use, dealing with food and drink in Part III, where he tells who first planted a vineyard, drank wine, put water in wine, sold wine in taverns, and who invented olive oil, honey, beer, cheese, etc. Not in Adams or BM/STC.
