VERDI, Giuseppe (1813-1901). Autograph letter signed to Giulio Ricordi, Genoa, 7 February 1880, a fascinating letter ostensibly concerning the piano reduction of his Ave Maria and the distribution of the parts of the chorus of Pater Noster but really expressing Verdi's admiration for earlier Italian composers whom he feels are being supplanted by the modern craze for the Germans, in particular Bach whom he compares unfavourably with Vittoria ...perchè Egli [Bach] il gigante, il colosso, l'indefinibile non ha mai saputo scrivere per le voci in quel modo!...Che bestemmia...È detta! , 3½ pages, octavo Verdi states his case for the splendours of Italian music forcibly Lo Stabat di Pergolesi è un capo d'opera...ma appartiene al genere noiso. Ciò non vorrebbe dir nulla, se questa composizione fosse di un qualche vecchio tedesco venuto alla moda and equally forcibly laments the fashion for the old Germans. Both the Ave Maria and the Pater Noster , about which Verdi is writing to his publisher, had their first performance shortly after this letter was written on 18 April at La Scala. The letter is published in George Martin Aspects of Verdi , Ransom Books, 1989, pp.246-7.
