(Without blank S4, section title repaired in the margin affecting the border, a few repaired tears, some soiling and faint staining.) Modern vellum, spine and lower edge lettered in manuscript (light soiling). Provenance : F. Moccia (cancelled title signature dated 1709).

For this edition, the first edition of 1590 was expanded by the addition of some 87 woodcuts, including those in book XII 'De gli habiti del America'. In the third edition (Venice: 1664), the drawings from which the illustrations were cut are attributed to Titian, Vecellio's uncle; however, according to Brunet this belief is a 'tradition mal fondée', and Hiler considers it doubtful'. Instead, Hiler ascribes the drawings to Vecellio and the original 420 woodcuts of the 1590 edition to Vecellio's friend Christoforo Chreiger (or Guerra, fl.1572-1590), an opinion supported by Passavant, who cites textual evidence in the first edition ( Le Peintre-graveur , Leipzig: 1860-1864, I, p.151).
