Engraved frontispiece by Vasi after Sebastiano Conca and 209 engraved plates by Vasi after Vasi et al., numbered 1-32, 34-40, 42-164, 166-200 [177 corrected to 179 in early manuscript, including RIBA 187 bis ], and 11 unnumbered [RIBA 25 bis , 33 bis numbered 33 in an early hand, new plate 34, 60 bis , 100 ter , 100 bis , 165 numbered in manuscript, 201-204 (201 bound in at the end of vol. I)]. (Variable light spotting, occasional light marking, fore-margins of some plates slightly trimmed, pl. 8 misbound after 3, lacking pl. 41, pl. 93 with neatly-repaired tear, another with neatly-repaired marginal tear.) 19th-century half roan gilt over patterned boards, spines gilt in compartments and lettered in 2 (spines a little rubbed and scuffed, skilfully recased and recornered, endpapers replaced). SECOND, ENLARGED EDITION, EARLY ISSUE OF VASI'S VIEWS OF ROME. Delle magnificenze di Roma antica e moderna first appeared in 10 books between 1747 and 1761, and was reissued under the present title by Mariano Vasi after his father's death. This edition contains most of the plates from the original work, supplemented by a small number of new engravings. Vasi fils appears to have kept this edition in print for a number of years (a further edition appeared in 1803), and, as RIBA notes, the 'total [number of plates] appears to have been made up with whatever prints were to hand, in addition to a the numbered core of the work (which was itself somewhat fluid)'. There seem to have been various issues of the 1786 edition, and this set appears closer to the earlier issue (e.g. the British Library set) than the later issue in the British Architectural Library: volume I title bears the price 'cinque zecchini'; the new plates 34, 106, 165, and 180 are present; the original plates 124 and 159 are present; plates 101 and 125 are numbered. This set of the Raccolta bears a presentation inscription from the publisher Samuel Fischer to the artist, writer and typographer E. R. Weiß, who had worked for Fischer; it is possible that the gift commemorates the appointment of Weiß as professor at the Unterrichtsanstalt des Königlichen Kunstgewerbemuseum, Berlin in 1910.
