Beschreibung:

15.5" cannon style barrel tapered from 2.25" to 3" at breech end. Bore diameter is 1.25", this is either a salute cannon or a signal cannon. Marked at the breech end on the top of barrel U.S.S. Philadelphia and dated Nov. 28, 1799. Two touch holes on the barrel. It is on a wood carriage marked This Gun was taken from the U.S.S. Frigate Philadelphia by Steven Decatur February 16, 1804, before setting her afire. This cannon was purchased by the consignor's grandfather from Stephen K. Nagy, who was an early gun dealer from Philadelphia. Mr. Nagy was in business from 1925-1960. Before Nagy it was owned by Stan V. Heubels and his father. Before Heubels it was possibly owned by Lieutenant Ralph Izard, USN who may have received it as a gift from Stephen Decatur. Supposedly this cannon was taken off the original U.S.S. Philadelphia by Mr Decatur or one of his crew at Tripoli. With the cannon comes extra history supplied by the consignor. Condition: Barrel has turned to a deep dark brown with lots of pitting very typical of the elements that it would have experienced on a boat and being exposed to salt water. The carriage was created in the 1950's to hold the cannon for decoration.
