Propertyy from a Private Collection, Savannah, GA Ulysses Davis (GA, 1913-1990), Two Folk Art Carvings of Zodiac Signs, c. 1970's/80's, comprising one of Libra with sign dates and elaborately carved scale within a punched wood frame, signature and address scratched on the back as well as owners label. The other of Scorpio (13 1/2 in. x 18 in.) with sign dates and decorative punched wood frame (unsigned) with owners label on the back. Provenance: these carvings of the Zodiac signs “Libra” and “Scorpio” have hung in the consignor's family’s living room for as long as he can remember. They were received from Mr. Ulysses Davis in the late 1970’s or early 80’s. His family owned and operated a Barber Supply in Savannah for many years and Mr. Davis was a good customer. His father would make regular deliveries to his Barber Shop and on one occasion saw Mr. Davis carving a Zodiac sign. His father asked Mr. Davis about it, saying he would like one for himself and his wife. Mr. Davis asked what their signs were and a few weeks later he came to their store with these carvings in tow.
