Beschreibung:

Typed Letter Initialed (“J.S.”), 1 p, 4to, New York, November 19, 1964, to “N.P.,” on personal letterhead, light creasing, some smudging to right margin. Steinbeck writes this letter to a member of his inner circle, describing his movements for the next few months and referencing his agent (“E.O.”—Elizabeth Otis). He asks his correspondent to take care of his fan mail—which has become something of a burden—while he is traveling. In part: “The letters from school children make me despair of our educational system. And apparently we are not getting by very well with our signature stamp. They get pretty snotty about that. I think what makes me the maddest is that they think they have a right to make these demands, although they, at least some of them, try spreading on the treacle flattery.” He closes with news of the new dog who will replace the venerable Charley, the standard poodle memorialized in the 1962 work, Travels With Charley: “I just got the most exciting news. My new dog has been chosen and is being trained. He is eighteen months old, a large pure white English bull terrier, chosen not only for looks and beauty but for character and disposition, a very strong dog and not quarrelsome.”
