Beschreibung:

lot of two, including one mahogany traveling medicine chest. Chest has two side-opening doors with brass hinges, with six apothecary bottles on either side of the doors and with original paper labels from New York pharmacies. Also inside are four larger apothecary bottles with glass stoppers and paper labels. Two drawers contain a miniature brass fleam in case, a hand-held apothecary scale and weights, a removable shelf with a pill sorter, two cased mini-measures, a glass mortar and pestle, and a porcelain ointment jar. The back of the chest has a sliding compartment with four more glass apothecary jars with stoppers and original paper labels, but could have been used at one point to conceal "special drugs." The case is complete with a mahogany stand, and measures: ht. 11, wd. 9.25, dp. 7 in. Lot includes another mahogany medicine chest that is fitted to hold the 11 apothecary jars and 3 pill jars that are included. Apothecary jars are labeled Dakin Brothers, London. Box also has a velvet compartment in the top that folds down to reveal a small booklet labeled Cox's Companion to the Family Medicine Chest. This pamphlet was most likely a supplemental item as its date may be later than that of the chest and its contents. The chest measures: ht. 5, wd. 9.25, dp. 6 in. The chests purportedly belonged to the former governor of New York William L. Marcy 1786 - 1857. Condition: Both chests are in excellent condition. Companion booklet may not be contemporary with the chest.
