with his Abilene, Kansas imprint. A silver gelatin copy image, ca 1900. Rosa credits the original of this image to A.P. Trott of Abilene and suggests it was likely made about 1871 when Hickok traveled from Abilene to nearby Junction City, Kans. (1982: 4-5; 138-139). It was subsequently copied by Forney in 1899, AND an early silver gelatin copy photograph, 3.75" x 4.5" with imprint of A.D. Colby on original card stock mount, 5.75" x 6.25". AUCTIONEERS NOTE: The Colby image is, of course, a retouched version of one of four plates exposed by Jeremiah Gurney and Son of New York late in 1873-1874. Rockwood later either copied these or acquired Gurney's plates and made direct contact prints from the original negative. Condition: 1st cracked across center and taped on reverse, 2nd vertical bend along right margin, through his shoulder and scuffing in background.
